Rob and his dad came home late one Saturday night in April
and smelled smoke immediately after exiting the car. Rob
quickly determined that the smoke was coming from behind
the neighbor’s house and discovered that their patio was
on fire.
Upon seeing smoke
in the house, Rob yelled into the house to see if anyone
was home, but only the dog replied and it barked quite aggressively.
Because of the dog and the smoke, it was not wise to immediately
enter the home; so Rob called the house from his home to
see if anyone might answer the phone, and then dialed 911
when he noticed flames inside the house.
Rob and his dad then
took a hose over to fight the fire, but for some unknown
reason the neighbor's outside water spigot did not function.
Rob quickly ran back to his own house and retrieved a fire
extinguisher which Rob’s dad then used to spray a burning
patio door inside. At this point, the fire from the door
was reaching the ceiling - the fire had burned through this
door and was about to ignite the interior of the home.
While Rob’s dad was
inside the house Rob ran to the homes of other neighbors
to get additional help, and even stopped a passing motorist.
Rob’s dad and another neighbor searched the house for people
and then coaxed the dog out to save him from the fire. When
the fire department arrived Rob was there to direct them
to the proper house.
Shortly after the fire
trucks arrived the owners came home and were shocked to
see their home on fire. Rob invited them and their four
children into his home while the fire department put out
the fire. While
the fire extinguisher did not put out the fire, it did slow
it down considerably. The fire
department credited the fire extinguisher and Rob's quick
thinking with saving the house from major damage.
For his actions, Rob Brunner
was awarded a Boy Scout National Certificate of Merit.
